Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today, September 29: Can Nifty Hold 22,700 on Expiry Day?
The Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today begins with a simple question: can buyers steady the market after Monday’s sharp fall?
Nifty closed below 22,800, banks faced heavy selling, and Wall Street offered little comfort overnight. Today’s monthly derivatives expiry adds another reason to expect quick changes in direction.
There is one small relief. The available overnight GIFT Nifty reading is almost flat. But a quiet futures quote after a large fall does not mean the selling has finished.
Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today: Previous Session Post-Market Summary — September 28, 2026
| Market indicator | Closing data / activity | Key takeaway |
| Nifty 50 | 22,780.25; −360.25 points (−1.56%) | Closed below 23,000 and 22,800 |
| Sensex | 72,771.72; −1,124.02 points (−1.52%) | Sharp decline across heavyweight shares |
| Bank Nifty | 54,471.65; −1,108.75 points (−1.99%) | Banks underperformed the main indices |
| Midcap index | Down around 1.6% | Selling extended beyond large caps |
| Smallcap index | Down around 1.8% | Smaller companies faced heavier pressure |
| Nifty PSU Bank | 8,026.10; −3.24% | Among the weakest sectors |
| Nifty IT | 28,086.50; −0.26% | Held up relatively better |
| India VIX | 13.63; +12.15% | Expected volatility increased |
| Nifty OI PCR | 0.71, versus 0.97 previously | Put OI declined relative to Call OI |
| Largest Nifty Call OI strike | 23,000 | Important expiry resistance reference |
| Largest Nifty Put OI strike | 22,800 | Major positioning zone; support is not assured |
| FII cash-market activity | Net sold ₹5,353.22 crore | Foreign selling remained heavy |
| DII cash-market activity | Net bought ₹5,189.02 crore | Domestic buying absorbed much of the outflow |
| Combined institutional flow | ₹164.20 crore net selling | Calculated from reported FII and DII totals |
| USD/INR | ₹95.9825 per dollar | Rupee weakened about 0.2% |
Closing indices and sector figures are from Monday’s market report; options and VIX readings are the September 28 snapshot. Institutional figures refer to cash-market activity.
Session takeaway: Monday saw broad selling, with banks and smaller stocks under pressure. Heavy domestic buying did not prevent the decline. For the September 29 session, Nifty 22,700 is the nearby support area to watch, while 23,000 remains a recovery hurdle.
Global Cues: US Stocks Fall, Europe Finishes Mixed
US and European Previous-Session Data
| Index | September 28 closing reference | Change |
| Dow Jones | 51,481.51 | −347.11; −0.67% |
| S&P 500 | 7,683.69 | −59.72; −0.77% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,820.38 | −248.34; −0.92% |
| Germany DAX* | 25,374.42 | −34.22; −0.13% |
| UK FTSE 100* | 10,684.88 | −10.37; −0.10% |
| France CAC 40 | 8,078.48 | +0.68; +0.01% |
| Euro Stoxx 50* | 6,309.35 | +6.53; +0.10% |
The main US concern: higher oil prices and bond yields pressured shares. Nvidia gained following a large buyback announcement, but that was not enough to lift the broader market.
For Indian investors, the connection is straightforward. Higher overseas bond yields make equities compete with more attractive interest income. Expensive shares can face selling even when their businesses continue to grow.
Reuters — Global Market Cues and Wall Street Update
Asian Markets and GIFT Nifty — September 29, 2026
Latest available morning data at 7:42 AM IST.
| Market | Latest available level | Change / quick takeaway |
| GIFT Nifty | 22,820.00 | −2.00 points; −0.01% — broadly flat opening indication |
| Japan Nikkei 225* | 65,251.00 | −0.95% — weakest among these major Asian benchmarks |
| Hong Kong Hang Seng* | 24,503.00 | −0.57% — trading lower |
| South Korea KOSPI | 6,885.30 | −0.06% — nearly flat |

| Taiwan Weighted | 47,837.28 | −0.39% — softer morning trading |
The provider labels Nikkei and Hang Seng readings as derived indications.
GIFT Nifty: What Has Changed?
- Latest available quote: 22,820.
- Morning high: 22,845.
- Morning low: 22,799.50.
- Provider’s previous close: 22,822.
The reading remains broadly flat. It does not indicate a strong recovery after Monday’s sell-off.
Asian sentiment remains cautious amid US-Iran uncertainty, elevated oil prices and higher US bond yields.
Commodity Prices — Latest Available Morning Readings
| Commodity / contract | Available price | Change |
| Brent crude — November 2026 | $106.88/barrel | +$1.60; approximately +1.52% |
| Brent crude — December 2026 | $99.15/barrel | +$0.59; +0.60% |
| WTI crude — November 2026 | $93.66/barrel | +$1.06; +1.14% |
| Gold futures — December 2026 | $4,162.22/troy ounce | −$6.18; −0.15% |
| Spot gold | $4,130.28/troy ounce | +$15.28; +0.37% |
| Silver futures — December 2026 | $61.100/troy ounce | −$0.618; −1.00% |
| Spot silver | $60.713/troy ounce | +$0.0745; +0.12% |
November Brent comes from the delayed contract table; other readings come from the provider’s commodity snapshot. Spot and futures changes use their respective reference prices.
Keep the Brent contract month in your article: November Brent is above $106, while December Brent is around $99. These are different delivery contracts, so the difference should not be described as an overnight price fall.
MCX Gold and Silver — Previous-Session References
MCX has not opened for Tuesday’s session. These are the Monday-night readings verified earlier, not fresh morning trades.
| MCX contract | Previous-session reference | Reported change |
| Gold October 2026 | ₹1,46,513 per 10 grams | −2.90% |
| Gold December 2026 | ₹1,48,750 per 10 grams | −2.95% |
| Silver December 2026 | ₹2,27,390 per kg | −3.11% |
The refreshed pages retain these prices but currently display an invalid timestamp. They should therefore remain labelled previous-session references until fresh trading begins.
Article-ready takeaway: GIFT Nifty is broadly flat near 22,820, while major Asian markets are mostly lower. Crude is rising, with November Brent above $106. The overall pre-market tone remains cautious ahead of monthly expiry.
Global News and Geopolitics: Oil Remains a Pressure Point
Qatari mediation kept hopes of further US-Iran discussions alive after the US rejected Iran’s proposal. Oil eased from its intraday highs but remained elevated. The US 10-year Treasury yield was around 5.251% in the overnight report.
For India, expensive crude can affect several parts of the economy:
- Airlines and transport companies face higher fuel costs.
- Paints, tyres and packaging businesses may face cost pressure.
- A larger oil import bill can pressure the rupee.
- Companies with limited pricing power may struggle to protect margins.
A peace-talk headline can change sentiment quickly. Watch whether oil actually falls and holds lower, rather than reacting only to the headline.
Indian ADR and GDR Update
These are September 28 overseas-session figures, with after-hours prices shown separately.
- Infosys ADR: regular close $10.52, up 0.19%. The available after-hours quote was $10.46, down 0.57% from that close, at 7:30 PM EDT.
- HDFC Bank ADR: regular close $22.41, down 2.61%. After-hours trading showed $22.83, up 1.87% from the regular close, at 6:58 PM EDT.
- Reliance Industries GDR, London RIGD: $49.85, down 1.68%, with a September 28, 4:35 PM BST timestamp.
These receipts offer an additional overseas cue. Currency movements, receipt ratios and different trading hours mean their percentage changes do not translate directly into the next Indian opening price.
Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex Support and Resistance
Nifty 50
- Support: 22,753, 22,678 and 22,556.
- Resistance: 22,996, 23,071 and 23,192.
- Broader decision zone: 22,700 support; 23,000 recovery hurdle.
Bank Nifty
- Support: 54,403, 54,178 and 53,814.
- Resistance: 55,130, 55,355 and 55,719.
These are published pivot-based levels, not assured turning points.
Sensex
- Support zones: 72,500, followed by 72,000.
- Recovery pivot: 72,800.
- Resistance zone: 73,200–73,500.
These broader zones come from the technical commentary accompanying Monday’s closing report.
A brief move above resistance is not enough by itself. Traders generally look for the price to hold there, with broader participation, before treating a bounce as something stronger.
Open Interest, PCR and India VIX
The September 29 setup uses Monday’s monthly-expiry options snapshot:
- Largest Nifty Call OI: 23,000; next major strikes 23,100 and 23,200.
- Largest Nifty Put OI: 22,800; followed by 22,500 and 22,700.
- Bank Nifty: largest Call OI at 55,000; largest Put OI at 54,000.
- Nifty OI PCR: 0.71, down from 0.97.
- India VIX: 13.63, up 12.15%.
Open interest measures outstanding positions. PCR compares Put OI with Call OI; it does not, by itself, reveal whether those positions were bought or sold.
The strike concentrations are reported without absolute OI quantities because the source’s contract-versus-underlying-unit convention was not independently verified.
Expiry can produce sharp reversals as positions are closed or adjusted. Options can also lose value quickly as remaining time runs out. A correct directional view does not always produce a profitable options trade.
Nifty Monthly Expiry Watch — September 29, 2026
Today is Nifty’s September monthly expiry. The table below uses the September 28 closing and options snapshot, not live expiry-day positioning. The fresh source refresh was unavailable, so these remain the previously verified figures.
| Expiry indicator | Previous-session data | What readers should watch |
| Nifty spot close | 22,780.25; −1.56% | Whether buyers can reclaim 22,800 |
| Nearest strike to closing spot | 22,800 | Immediate area of interest |
| Largest Call OI strike | 23,000 | Potential recovery hurdle |
| Next Call OI concentrations | 23,100 and 23,200 | Further overhead positioning |
| Largest Put OI strike | 22,800 | Heavy positioning does not guarantee support |
| Next Put OI concentrations | 22,500 and 22,700 | Watch how positions change if prices fall |
| Strongest fresh Call addition | 23,000 | Watch for continued additions or unwinding |
| Strongest fresh Put addition | 22,800 | Whether this positioning holds after opening |
| Largest Put unwinding | 23,000 | Previous Put positions were reduced |
| Nifty OI PCR | 0.71, versus 0.97 | Put OI weakened relative to Call OI |
| India VIX | 13.63; +12.15% | Expected volatility increased |
| Pivot support levels | 22,753 / 22,678 / 22,556 | Reference levels for downside moves |
| Pivot resistance levels | 22,996 / 23,071 / 23,192 | Reference levels for a recovery |
How to Read the Expiry Setup
Open interest means outstanding option positions. A large concentration can help identify an area worth watching, but it cannot tell us where Nifty must settle.
Likewise, PCR of 0.71 means roughly 0.71 outstanding Puts for every outstanding Call in the measured set. It does not prove that traders are buying Calls or selling Puts.
Three Things to Watch After Opening
- Price confirmation: Does Nifty hold a recovery, or quickly slip back into its opening range?
- Changing positions: Fresh OI additions and unwinding matter more during the session than yesterday’s static snapshot.
- Premium behaviour: Option premiums can fall rapidly as time runs out. Even getting the direction right may not be enough.
Reader takeaway: Use these levels as a preparation map. Check the live September 29 option chain before acting, and avoid treating a large OI strike as an assured support level or expiry target.
For education only. This is not a buy or sell recommendation. Derivatives involve substantial risk.

Rupee Update
The rupee closed Monday at ₹95.9825 per US dollar, about 0.2% weaker. This is the latest verified domestic closing reference used here, not a fresh Tuesday onshore quote.
For domestic bullion, both international prices and the rupee matter. A weaker rupee can partly cushion a fall in dollar-denominated gold, though it cannot guarantee higher MCX prices.
Latest SEBI Update: What Has Actually Been Issued?
SEBI published a Master Circular for Debenture Trustees on September 28, 2026. That is the latest dated item visible in the official legal listing checked for this report.
Its subject is the debt-market trustee framework. It should not be presented as a new Nifty expiry rule or an immediate change to equity trading.
For readers, the distinction matters:
- A consultation proposes changes.
- A board decision may need follow-up regulations or circulars.
- An operational circular must be read with its effective date.
No change to today’s equity-expiry procedure has been established from this master circular. A detailed clause-by-clause impact assessment is outside this morning snapshot.
Two Growth Businesses to Track: BEL and Max Healthcare
Today’s watchlist moves away from yesterday’s cable and electrical equipment names. These are research candidates, not buy calls.
1. Bharat Electronics: Revenue Growth Outpaces Profit Growth
BEL’s Q1 FY27 release reported:
- Revenue: ₹5,533.06 crore, up 25.27%.
- Profit after tax: ₹1,048.33 crore, up 8.17%.
- Order book: ₹72,258 crore as of July 1, 2026.
The order book gives visibility, but orders become earnings only when projects are executed. Profit growing more slowly than sales also deserves attention. Investors should examine delivery schedules, costs and cash collections in the next result.
Technical picture: BEL closed at ₹385.50 on September 28, with a day low of ₹384.10 and high of ₹393.45. Its displayed 52-week low was ₹380.45.
My reading of that range is cautious. The ₹380–₹384 area is a nearby reference zone, while reclaiming ₹393–₹394 would improve the immediate picture. These are observations from the recorded range, not price targets.
Outlook: keep the business on the research list, but do not assume earnings growth will stop the share from falling during broad selling.
Bharat Electronics — Official Q1 FY27 Results
2. Max Healthcare: Expansion Needs to Convert Into Profit
Max Healthcare’s Q1 FY27 consolidated figures showed:
- Revenue from operations: ₹2,366.17 crore, up 16.70%.
- Profit for the period: ₹322.96 crore, up 4.87%.
- Basic EPS: ₹3.32, versus ₹3.17 a year earlier.
These are consolidated financial-statement figures, not the separate network-level gross revenue measure.
Sales grew faster than profit here too. For a hospital business, investors should watch utilisation, staffing costs and how quickly added capacity contributes to earnings. Revenue growth alone does not tell the whole story.
Technical picture: the September 28 closing reference was ₹1,000.10, down 1.37%. The day’s range was ₹989.10–₹1,015.80. The provider showed the 50-day average at ₹1,043.60 and 200-day average at ₹1,035.64.
The price remains below both averages. My near-term reference is support around ₹989, with hurdles near ₹1,016 and then ₹1,036–₹1,044.
Outlook: business growth is worth following, but the chart has not yet confirmed a sustained recovery.

Short-Term and Long-Term Investment View
For Short-Term Participants
A large fall can attract bargain hunters and short covering. Neither automatically changes the trend.
- Let the opening range form before judging direction.
- Decide the maximum acceptable loss before entering.
- Check whether banks participate in any recovery.
- Avoid increasing a losing position simply because the option premium looks cheap.
For Long-Term Investors
Separate a lower share price from a better valuation. A stock becomes more attractive only when its price makes sense against likely earnings, cash generation and risks.
A practical review starts with three questions:
- Has the business outlook changed?
- Is debt manageable if borrowing costs remain high?
- Is the portfolio already too concentrated in one sector?
For money needed soon, daily market weakness is not a reason to take additional equity risk. Long-term capital can be deployed in stages when the underlying research supports the decision.
Today’s Market Forecast: Five Points to Watch
- Opening bias remains cautious. The overnight GIFT reading offers limited reassurance after Monday’s decline.
- Nifty’s 22,700 area is the immediate test. Sustained weakness below it would leave the lower support zones exposed.
- A recovery needs follow-through. Holding above 22,800 and working towards 23,000 would be more useful than a brief opening bounce.
- Banks remain central to the session. A broad recovery will be harder if Bank Nifty continues to weaken.
- Expiry and oil headlines can cause sudden reversals. Treat these as conditional scenarios, not a fixed prediction of today’s close.
