Indian Markets Weekly View Oct 12–16 2026 with Nifty levels, CPI and IT earnings

Indian Markets Weekly View: CPI, IT Earnings & Nifty Levels to Watch | Oct 12–16, 2026

Indian equities finally broke an uncomfortable streak last week.

After eight straight weeks of losses, the Nifty 50 and Sensex managed to close the October 5–9 week in positive territory. The recovery was small, and most of it came from Friday’s sharp rebound after TCS results helped revive buying in IT stocks.

The pressure has not disappeared. Crude oil remains above $100 a barrel, the rupee is hovering close to record lows, FIIs are still selling heavily and the RBI has started tightening monetary conditions.

For the week of October 12–16, attention shifts to India’s inflation data, a busy IT earnings calendar, US inflation, global bond yields and the RBI’s fresh steps to stabilise the rupee.

Week Gone By – Indian Market Recap

IndexOct 9 CloseWeekly Change
Nifty 5022,520.45+0.44%
Sensex72,472.33+0.78%
Bank Nifty55,256.65About +1.5%

Nifty traded as high as 22,776.10 during the week before falling below 22,200 at one stage. Friday’s 1.3% rally eventually helped the index finish with a gain of just under 100 points for the week.

The week had two very different halves.

Early gains were interrupted by the RBI’s 25-basis-point repo rate hike on October 7, which lifted the policy rate to 5.50%. It was India’s first rate hike in nearly four years. The RBI also changed its stance from neutral to “calibrated tightening,” signalling a stronger focus on inflation.

Thursday then brought a sharp sell-off as crude oil climbed, global bond yields remained high, the rupee weakened and foreign investors continued selling. Nifty dropped to 22,231.80 before Friday’s recovery.

TCS changed the mood at the end of the week. Its Q2 numbers helped pull buyers back into IT stocks, and the Nifty recovered to 22,520.45.

Sector Performance

The weekly sector picture was far healthier than the previous week, although leadership remained selective.

FMCG gained about 2.45%, while the Nifty PSU Bank index rose 2.38%. IT finished around 0.95% higher, with Friday’s 3% jump doing much of the work. Financial stocks gained around 1.7% for the week.

Banking stocks showed relative strength even after the RBI rate increase. A higher-rate cycle can support lending yields for some banks, although funding costs and liquidity conditions also need to be considered.

IT benefited from TCS results and a weaker rupee. The next test now comes from HCLTech, Wipro, Persistent Systems and Tech Mahindra.

Auto, pharma and realty were less convincing during the week. Rate-sensitive sectors faced pressure after the RBI hike, while expensive fuel and higher borrowing costs added another layer of caution.

FII & DII Activity

Foreign selling remained one of the biggest weak points in the market.

DateFII Cash FlowDII Cash Flow
Oct 5-₹4,699 crore+₹5,182 crore
Oct 6-₹2,961 crore+₹5,089 crore
Oct 7-₹6,121 crore+₹4,597 crore
Oct 8-₹12,944 crore+₹10,703 crore
Oct 9-₹3,569 crore+₹4,743 crore
Week Total-₹30,294 crore+₹30,313 crore

Domestic institutions almost completely offset the foreign selling in cash terms.

That support has helped prevent a deeper fall, but persistent FII outflows still matter. High US bond yields, the weak rupee, expensive crude and relative valuations all influence foreign allocation decisions.

Flows should be read alongside earnings and global conditions rather than treated as a stand-alone market signal.

Global Market Recap

US Markets

Wall Street ended Friday higher, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq all finishing the week in positive territory.

Attention is now shifting toward US inflation and the start of the large-bank earnings season. US Treasury yields remain unusually high, with the 10-year yield around 5.26% on Friday after recently touching multi-decade highs.

Higher US yields matter for India because they increase the relative attraction of dollar assets and can contribute to foreign outflows from emerging markets.

US Bureau of Labor Statistics October 2026 calendar

European Markets

European stocks recovered on Friday, with the STOXX 600 gaining around 1% and managing a small weekly advance.

Lower oil prices during part of Friday’s session and easing European bond yields helped, although concerns around France’s fiscal position continue to affect European debt markets.

Asian Markets

Asian trading remained mixed. China’s markets reopened after the Golden Week holiday, while Japan remained sensitive to bond-market moves and global technology sentiment.

Across the region, the combination of expensive oil, high global interest rates and the US inflation outlook remains more important than any single equity-market move.

Commodity & Currency Watch

Brent crude settled at $104.72 a barrel on October 9, while WTI ended at $91.85. Both posted weekly gains after another volatile stretch driven by Middle East supply worries and disruptions in the US Gulf of Mexico.

For India, Brent above $100 deserves attention. India imports most of its crude requirement, so expensive oil can feed into inflation, the trade deficit, corporate input costs and pressure on the rupee.

Gold rebounded to around $4,194 an ounce on Friday and was up about 1.3% for the week. Silver rose to approximately $60.77 an ounce.

The rupee ended Friday near ₹96.73 per US dollar, close to its record low of ₹96.96. It still declined over the week despite the RBI rate hike.

The Dollar Index remained above 102 during the latter part of the week. A strong dollar combined with high crude is an uncomfortable combination for the Indian currency.

The RBI responded on Saturday with new measures. From October 12, it will directly provide dollars to Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL through a special window, reducing their need to buy dollars in the spot market. It has also tightened some foreign-exchange hedging rules.

Technical Outlook for Oct 12–16

These levels are technical reference zones based on recent price action. They are not guaranteed reversal points.

IndexSupportResistance
Nifty 5022,300–22,200; 22,180–22,00022,700–22,780; 23,000–23,150
Bank Nifty54,700–54,500; 54,00055,400–55,500; 56,000
Sensex72,000; 71,30073,000–73,100; 74,000

Nifty 50

Nifty’s close at 22,520.45 improves the immediate picture, but one strong Friday does not erase eight weeks of prior weakness.

A sustained move above 22,700–22,780 would strengthen the recovery attempt. Above 23,000, the chart would begin to look more constructive.

Below 22,200, last week’s low zone returns to focus. A decisive break under roughly 22,180 could reopen the path towards 22,000.

Bank Nifty

Bank Nifty closed at 55,256.65 and showed better relative strength than Nifty during the week.

The first hurdle sits around 55,400–55,500. A clean move above it could bring 56,000 into view.

The 54,500 area is the first meaningful support. Below 54,000, the near-term picture would weaken.

Sensex

Sensex finished at 72,472.33.

The 73,000–73,100 region is the immediate resistance area. Sustaining above it would support a broader recovery.

On the downside, 72,000 is the first reference, followed by last week’s lower region around 71,300.

India VIX & Market Sentiment

India VIX closed at 14.375 on October 9, down 5.9% on Friday.

Compared with its October 1 close of 14.455, VIX was almost unchanged for the week. What stands out is the intraday movement: it jumped as high as 15.48 on October 8 during the market sell-off before cooling again.

A VIX near 14 does not suggest panic, but the sharp daily swings show that traders are still paying for event risk.

FII derivatives positioning also moved sharply from session to session, so using one Put-Call Ratio or one day’s Open Interest figure as a directional signal would be misleading. Price action around 22,200 and 22,800 is more useful for the broader weekly setup.

Big Events to Watch This Week

Oct 13IMF economic outlookGlobal growth and inflation assumptions
Oct 14India WPI + US CPIRates, yields, dollar and FII flows

India’s September CPI is scheduled for Monday, October 12.

The US September CPI report arrives on October 14, followed by Producer Price Index data on October 15. These releases could quickly move Treasury yields and the dollar.

The Indian IT calendar is unusually busy: HCLTech reports October 12, Wipro and Persistent Systems on October 15, and Tech Mahindra on October 16.

Wipro Investor Relations

The RBI is also tightening daily CRR maintenance requirements from October 16. Banks will therefore have another liquidity-related change to digest after last week’s policy hike.

IPO Watch

The primary market stays active this week.

R.K. Fashion Accessories is scheduled to list on October 12 after its SME IPO closed last week. Its issue price band was ₹77–82.

HD Fire Protect opens on October 13 and closes on October 15. The ₹712.31 crore issue has a price band of ₹258–271 per share.

Fusion CX opens on October 14 and closes on October 16. The ₹702 crore mainboard IPO has a price band of ₹275–289. Its allotment is scheduled for October 19, followed by a proposed listing on October 22.

These are scheduled dates and can change. Grey-market premiums are deliberately excluded because they are unofficial indicators.

Stocks and Sectors to Watch

IT Stocks

IT will probably produce the most company-specific action this week.

TCS has set the opening tone, but HCLTech, Wipro, Persistent and Tech Mahindra will show whether demand strength is broad or limited to particular companies.

Watch revenue growth, deal wins, margins, discretionary technology spending and management comments around AI-led work.

Banks and PSU Banks

Banks enter the week after the RBI’s repo-rate increase and fresh currency measures.

The sector will now have to balance potentially higher lending yields against funding costs, tighter liquidity and slowing rate-sensitive demand.

Sun Pharma

Sun Pharma’s board meets on October 12 to consider raising up to ₹15,000 crore through non-convertible debentures. The size and purpose of the fundraise will be worth examining.

Oil-Sensitive Sectors

Aviation, paints, chemicals and other crude-linked businesses remain sensitive while Brent trades above $100.

A sustained decline in oil would remove one major pressure point. Another spike would do the opposite.

Two Growth Stocks to Study

These are research ideas, not buy calls.

1. Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra has strong positions in SUVs, tractors, commercial vehicles and electric mobility, along with financial-services exposure through the wider group.

Q1 FY27 consolidated revenue rose 28% year-on-year to ₹58,188 crore, while PAT increased 34% to ₹5,455 crore. The company reported a 25% SUV revenue market share and 44.9% tractor market share.

September auto sales were also healthy. Total vehicle sales rose 15% year-on-year to 114,874 units, while domestic SUV volumes increased 14% to 64,092.

The stock closed around ₹2,792 on October 9. The ₹2,740–2,750 area is a useful technical reference after the recent correction, while ₹2,850–2,900 is the first broader resistance zone.

Key risk: higher interest rates can affect auto financing, while rural demand and tractor sales depend partly on agricultural conditions.

What to monitor: SUV growth, EV execution, tractor demand and margins.

2. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries

Sun Pharma combines a large Indian pharmaceutical franchise with US generics and a growing specialty-medicines business.

In Q1 FY27, profit rose 27% to ₹2,895 crore, while revenue increased 10.5% to ₹15,300 crore. Specialty-medicine sales climbed 12.8% to $351 million and represented almost 22% of revenue.

The stock ended October 9 near ₹1,760 after trading as low as ₹1,745 during the week. The ₹1,740–1,750 area is the immediate chart reference, while ₹1,800–1,825 is the first resistance band.

The October 12 debt-fundraising proposal adds another event to track.

Key risk: acquisition integration, higher debt, US pricing pressure and regulatory issues can affect earnings.

What to monitor: specialty-sales growth, India business performance, debt strategy and progress on international expansion.

Short-Term Market Setup

The immediate Nifty battle is between 22,200 and 22,800.

Bank Nifty’s comparable zone is roughly 54,500 to 55,500.

The strongest positive trigger would be a combination of better-than-feared earnings, softer inflation, easing crude prices and some reduction in FII selling.

The main downside risk is the opposite mix: Brent pushing higher, US yields returning to their recent highs, a further slide in the rupee and disappointing Q2 numbers.

For traders, the Friday rebound deserves respect, but confirmation matters more than trying to predict whether the market has already made its final bottom.

Long-Term Investor View

Long-term investors have a different decision to make.

After the recent correction, valuations have improved in several pockets, but that does not make every fallen stock attractive.

The positive side is that India’s economic growth remains healthy. The RBI now expects FY27 GDP growth of 7.1%. Earnings season will tell us whether corporate profits can keep pace.

The risks are equally visible: oil above $100, a weak rupee, higher domestic interest rates and persistent foreign selling.

For portfolios built over several years, periods like this are better used to compare business quality, earnings visibility, debt and valuation rather than reacting to every index swing.

Staggered investing in companies with healthy cash flows and sensible valuations can reduce the pressure of trying to identify the exact market bottom.

Indian Markets Weekly View for Oct 12 – 16 Week – 5 Key Things to Watch

  • India CPI on October 12: the first major test after the RBI rate hike.
  • Nifty 22,200–22,800: the zone that may decide whether Friday’s recovery develops further.
  • IT earnings: HCLTech, Wipro, Persistent and Tech Mahindra can reshape the sector outlook.
  • Crude oil and USD/INR: Brent above $100 and the rupee near 97 remain important risks.
  • US CPI and bond yields: another inflation surprise could quickly affect global equities and FII positioning.

FAQs

Q1. Is Nifty bullish after Friday’s rally?

The short-term setup has improved, but a confirmed trend change needs more evidence. Sustaining above 22,700–22,800 would strengthen the recovery case, while a move above 23,000 would be more meaningful.

Q2. What is the main Nifty support for October 12–16?

The first important region is 22,300–22,200. Below that, the recent low around 22,180 and the psychological 22,000 level become relevant.

Q3. What are the biggest market events this week?

India CPI on October 12, US CPI on October 14 and the cluster of IT results from HCLTech, Wipro, Persistent Systems and Tech Mahindra are among the main scheduled events.

Q4. Why is the rupee important for Indian equities?

A weaker rupee can increase the cost of imports, especially crude oil, and contribute to inflation. Exporters such as IT companies may receive some currency benefit, but persistent rupee weakness can also affect foreign investor confidence.

Q5. Is this correction a buying opportunity for long-term investors?

It can create better prices in selected companies, but a lower share price alone is not enough. Earnings growth, debt, cash flow, competitive position and valuation should still drive the decision. Building positions gradually can be more sensible than trying to call the exact bottom.
