Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today, October 29, 2026: GIFT Nifty Edges Up, Banks Hold Firm—Can Nifty Recover?
Indian markets enter Thursday with mixed signals. GIFT Nifty has edged higher, Wall Street ended with modest gains, and banking stocks showed strength in the previous Indian session. Elevated crude oil prices, however, remain a concern.
For traders, the first question is whether Nifty can move back above Wednesday’s high near 22,778. A positive opening alone will not settle that question. Buying needs to continue after the opening rush.
Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today: Main Points to Watch
- Nifty finished below 22,700, while Bank Nifty gained.
- GIFT Nifty was modestly higher against its own previous reference price.
- The US Federal Reserve kept its policy rate unchanged.
- Both FIIs and DIIs were net buyers in the Indian cash market.
- TVS Motor and Cholamandalam Investment are on the earnings watchlist.
The overall setup calls for a selective approach. Banking strength is encouraging, but a broader recovery needs participation from heavyweight shares that struggled on Wednesday.
Previous Day Post-Market Summary: October 28, 2026
Indian markets ended Wednesday lower, but banks and smaller companies performed better. Nifty closed just below 22,700, while Sensex lost 353 points. Both indices recovered from their intraday lows.
Closing Market Data
| Index | Closing level | Daily change |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 22,698.85 | −50.90 points (−0.22%) |
| Sensex | 73,246.03 | −352.64 points (−0.48%) |
| Bank Nifty | 54,267.40 | +292.50 points (+0.54%) |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | 57,274.70 | +244.80 points (+0.43%) |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | 18,634.90 | +166.20 points (+0.90%) |
| India VIX | 16.25 | −0.15 points (−0.91%) |
Important Highlights From the Session
- Banks outperformed: Bank Nifty gained 0.54%, offering support while the headline indices declined.
- IT remained weak: Nifty IT fell 1.98%.
- Auto attracted buying: Nifty Auto rose 1.45%, while Consumer Durables gained 1.41%.
- Smaller stocks held up: Midcap and smallcap indices finished higher, showing that selling was not uniform across the market.
- Recovery from the lows: Nifty bounced from around 22,497.70, while Sensex recovered from 72,603.57. Both still finished below their previous closes.
FII and DII Activity
| Investor category | Net cash-market activity | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign institutional investors — FII | +₹871.83 crore | Net buyers |
| Domestic institutional investors — DII | +₹643.35 crore | Net buyers |
| Combined institutional flows | +₹1,515.18 crore | Net buying |
What the Closing Session Suggests
The market showed selective strength despite weaker benchmarks. Banks, auto and smaller companies held up, while IT remained under pressure.
For the next session, 22,700 is the immediate round-number reference for Nifty, with Wednesday’s low near 22,498 worth watching on the downside. A sustained recovery needs buying across more heavyweight shares—not just a brief opening bounce.
Global Cues: US and European Markets
The latest completed-session readings show modest US gains and a mixed-to-positive European finish.
| Market index | Latest completed-session level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones | 52,479.62 | +0.19% |
| S&P 500 | 7,744.37 | +0.28% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,549.85 | +0.27% |
| Germany DAX | 25,704.02 | +0.44% |
| UK FTSE 100 | 10,694.50 | +0.07% |
| France CAC 40 | 7,886.96 | Broadly unchanged |
Fed Decision: What It Means for Indian Investors
The Federal Reserve maintained its target interest-rate range at 3.75%–4.00%. Its implementation notice makes the decision effective from October 29.
For Indian investors, the next thing to track is the reaction in the dollar and bond yields. A steady policy rate does not automatically mean cheaper money or stronger foreign inflows.

Geopolitical Developments and Oil
Reuters reported that an attack on a Saudi refinery raised supply concerns. The same global market update highlighted upcoming US inflation data and central-bank decisions as further event risks.
India imports a large share of its oil requirements. Persistently expensive crude can put pressure on the rupee and on businesses with substantial fuel or petroleum-linked costs. Airlines, paints and transport-related businesses deserve attention when oil moves sharply.

Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex: Support and Resistance
These are reference zones for planning, not assured reversal points. Nifty and Sensex pivot levels below are calculated from Wednesday’s published high, low and close, then rounded.
Nifty 50 Levels
- Previous close: 22,698.85.
- Central pivot: Around 22,658.
- First support: Around 22,538.
- Next support references: Wednesday’s low near 22,498, followed by 22,378.
- First resistance zone: 22,778–22,819.
- Higher resistance: Around 22,939.
The immediate test is whether Nifty can clear its previous high and remain above it. A move below Wednesday’s low would weaken the recovery setup.
Bank Nifty Levels
- Previous close: 54,267.40.
- Central pivot: Around 54,111.
- Support: 53,782, followed by 53,297.
- Resistance: 54,596, followed by 54,925.
Banks outperformed on Wednesday. Holding above the pivot would help preserve that relative strength, although traders should still check participation across the major banking shares.
Sensex Levels
- Previous close: 73,246.03.
- Central pivot: Around 73,125.
- Support: 72,725, followed by 72,203.
- Resistance: 73,646, followed by 74,047.
Nifty and Sensex calculations use the published October 28 trading ranges. These are mechanical pivot calculations, not independently established demand or supply zones.
Options Data: Open Interest, PCR and India VIX
For the November 3 Nifty expiry, Quantsapp’s October 28, 4:45 p.m. snapshot showed:
- Put-call ratio by open interest: 1.04.
- Displayed total call OI: 12.26 crore.
- Displayed total put OI: 12.80 crore.
- Max pain: 22,700.
The displayed crore figures should not be confused with the number of exchange lots. Providers may report underlying units or contracts differently.
Another provider showed PCR at 1.05 at 3:40 p.m. Differences in snapshot time and coverage mean there is little value in treating the second decimal as a strong trading signal.
A PCR close to one suggests fairly balanced outstanding put and call positions. It does not reveal every participant’s strategy.
India VIX at 16.25 indicates that volatility remains relevant even after Wednesday’s small decline. VIX measures expected volatility, not market direction.
Max pain is also not a promised closing level. Check the live option chain after trading begins, especially before making an expiry-related trade.
Today’s Trade Setup: Nifty Open Interest, PCR and Max Pain — Quantsap
FII and DII Activity: Both Were Net Buyers
October 28 cash-market figures showed:
- FII net buying: ₹871.83 crore.
- DII net buying: ₹643.35 crore.
- Combined net buying: ₹1,515.18 crore.
Institutional buying offers some support, but the benchmarks still declined. The practical lesson is simple: aggregate flows alone cannot explain which stocks were bought or where selling pressure was concentrated.
Commodities: Crude Oil, Gold, Silver and MCX
| Commodity and contract | Latest verified quote | Change or timestamp |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude, January 2027 | $110.72 per barrel | +0.19%; provider snapshot |
| WTI crude, December 2026 | $101.91 per barrel | −0.85%; provider snapshot |
| International gold, December 2026 | $4,064.75 per troy ounce | +0.32%; provider snapshot |
| International silver, December 2026 | $53.893 per troy ounce | +0.41%; provider snapshot |
| MCX Gold, December 4 expiry | ₹1,43,600 per 10 grams | −0.37%; October 28, 11:29 p.m. IST |
| MCX Silver, December 4 expiry | ₹1,94,450 per kg | −1.15%; October 28, 11:29 p.m. IST |
International figures are indicative provider quotes; their displayed times were not verified in IST. MCX figures are the latest verified late-session readings, not fresh Thursday morning trades.
Watch the contract month: January Brent should not be compared directly with a December settlement to calculate an overnight fall. Different delivery months can trade at different prices.
Gold and silver can also move differently in India because domestic futures reflect currency movements and local pricing factors alongside international prices.
Currency Update: Rupee Remains Under Watch
The rupee closed Wednesday at ₹95.2200 against the US dollar, compared with ₹95.1150 previously—a weakening of 10.5 paise. This is the previous domestic close, not Thursday’s opening exchange rate.
For import-heavy businesses, a weaker rupee can raise costs. Exporters may benefit from currency translation, but that benefit depends on hedging, overseas expenses and customer demand.
Watch the rupee alongside crude rather than reading either in isolation.
Indian ADR and GDR Update
The latest verified October 28 US regular-session closes included:
- Infosys ADR: $12.09, down 0.17%. Its later displayed after-hours quote was $12.17, up 0.66% from that close, at 7:17 p.m. EDT.
- HDFC Bank ADR: $21.55, up 0.89% in the regular session.
These provide overseas sentiment clues. They are not direct rupee price targets because depositary ratios, currencies and trading hours differ.
GDR data: A sufficiently fresh October 28 GDR quote was not verified. Older figures have been omitted rather than labelled as current.
Two Growth Stocks to Track After Q2 Results
TVS Motor: Strong Earnings, but Watch the Entry Price
TVS Motor’s Q2 FY27 standalone results reported:
- Revenue: ₹17,103 crore, up 44% year on year.
- EBITDA: ₹2,219 crore, up 47%.
- EBITDA margin: 13.0%, against 12.7%.
- Profit after tax: ₹1,377 crore, up 52%.
Profit growth outpaced revenue growth, while the operating margin improved. That is a useful combination to examine when assessing earnings quality.
Technical picture: The NSE share closed at ₹4,239.90, up 3.74%, after trading between ₹4,070 and ₹4,258. The session high near ₹4,258 is the immediate breakout reference. The ₹4,070–₹4,087 area marks the previous session’s low and prior close.
Outlook: For short-term traders, follow-through above the high matters more than the headline earnings growth. Long-term investors should examine valuation, cash generation and whether margins remain sustainable as the business expands.
TVS Motor Q2 Results: Revenue, Profit and Growth Update
Cholamandalam Investment: Profit Growth With Credit Quality in Focus
Cholamandalam reported Q2 FY27:
- Consolidated revenue from operations: ₹9,270.92 crore.
- Consolidated profit after tax: ₹1,630.34 crore, compared with ₹1,159.61 crore a year earlier.
- Standalone profit after tax: ₹1,630.07 crore.
The consolidated profit increase was approximately 40.6%. Keeping standalone and consolidated figures separate avoids misleading comparisons.
Technical picture: The NSE stock closed at ₹1,545.20, up 5.19%. Wednesday’s high of ₹1,557.10 is the immediate resistance reference. The previous close near ₹1,469 and Wednesday’s low near ₹1,451 form lower reference levels.
Outlook: Strong profit growth is encouraging, but lending businesses need closer scrutiny of credit costs, overdue loans and funding expenses. After a sharp one-day rise, buying without a defined risk limit can leave little room for normal profit-booking.
These are research watchlist candidates, not assured-return recommendations.

New SEBI Rules: Changes Traders Should Prepare For
A recently announced market-structure change is scheduled to take effect on December 7, 2026:
- Regular cash trading in all stocks will continue until 3:30 p.m.
- The Closing Auction Session will run from 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
- Expiring derivatives’ final settlement prices will use the prescribed last-30-minute VWAP methodology rather than CAS closing prices.
These changes are upcoming; they should not be applied to today’s session.
The practical impact is on closing-price execution and expiry-day planning. Traders will need to distinguish the cash closing price from the applicable derivatives settlement calculation and check their broker’s updated timings.

Upcoming and Ongoing IPO Updates — Zerodha
Short-Term and Long-Term Investment Approach
For Short-Term Traders
- Let the opening range develop before chasing a gap.
- Watch whether banks retain strength while Nifty tests resistance.
- Decide the exit level before entering a trade.
- Keep position size small enough to handle sudden oil or geopolitical headlines.
For Long-Term Investors
Use quarterly results to update the investment case. Compare profit growth with cash flow, debt, margins and valuation.
A strong company can still be an expensive purchase. Staggering investments can reduce dependence on one entry price, while diversification limits the damage from a single disappointing result.
Today’s Market Forecast: Five Points to Watch
- Opening bias: GIFT Nifty suggests a mildly positive starting cue, subject to subsequent trading.
- Nifty recovery test: A sustained move through 22,778–22,819 would strengthen the recovery attempt.
- Downside risk: A break below the previous low near 22,498 would weaken the setup.
- Sector leadership: Banks need to retain strength, while reduced IT selling would help broaden any recovery.
- Main external risk: Expensive crude and fresh geopolitical headlines could interrupt gains despite supportive US closing cues.
