Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today, October 9, 2026: GIFT Nifty Rebounds, Can Nifty Hold 22,000 as Brent Tops $104?
Indian markets head into Friday with a possible opening bounce after Thursday’s sharp fall. But the pressure from expensive oil and foreign selling has hardly gone away.
This Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today tracks the overnight recovery signal, the previous session’s damage and the levels that matter before the opening bell.
GIFT Nifty’s latest verified overnight reading was 22,370, up 115 points or 0.52%, at 3:29 AM IST. That offers some encouragement. However, it is an overnight quote and needs refreshing during Friday’s morning session.
The other big number is $104.28—Brent crude’s Thursday settlement. A market trying to recover while oil stays this expensive can remain highly sensitive to headlines.
Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today: October 8, 2026: Indian Post-Market Summary
Indian equities closed sharply lower on Thursday. Nifty fell 371 points, while Sensex lost more than 1,045 points, as high crude prices, foreign selling and concerns over tighter monetary policy weighed on sentiment.
| Market indicator | October 8 closing data | Key takeaway |
| Nifty 50 | 22,231.80; −371.25 points (−1.64%) | Closed near the session low |
| Sensex | 71,593.24; −1,045.46 points (−1.44%) | Heavy selling in large-cap shares |
| Bank Nifty | 54,515.05; −540.50 points (−0.98%) | Outperformed Nifty, but still declined |
| Nifty intraday range | 22,179.90–22,599.05 | Nearly 419-point trading range |
| Sensex intraday range | 71,327.75–72,693.97 | More than 1,366-point trading range |
| Broader markets | Mid-cap and small-cap indices fell over 2% | Selling extended beyond heavyweights |
| Sector performance | All 16 major sectors declined | Broad-based weakness |
Institutional Activity and Derivatives
| Indicator | October 8 data | Reader takeaway |
| FII/FPI activity | Net sold ₹12,943.58 crore | Heavy foreign selling continued |
| DII activity | Net bought ₹10,703.11 crore | Domestic institutions absorbed substantial selling |
| Combined institutional flow | Net selling ₹2,240.47 crore | DII buying did not fully offset foreign withdrawals |
| India VIX | 15.275; +10.01% | Expected volatility increased sharply |
| Nifty Put-Call Ratio | 0.73 versus 0.89 previously | Put OI declined relative to Call OI |
| Highest Nifty weekly Call OI | 22,700 strike: 1.252 crore | An overhead positioning zone |
| Highest Nifty weekly Put OI | 22,000 strike: 1.03 crore | A downside positioning zone to monitor |
Institutional figures are provisional cash-market data. OI quantities follow the source’s reporting basis; confirm expiry and units before comparing with a broker’s option chain.
Levels to Carry Into the Next Session
- Nifty support: 22,180, followed by 22,000 and 21,700.
- Nifty resistance: 22,400, followed by 22,600–22,700.
- Bank Nifty pivot supports: 54,395, 54,239 and 53,987.
- Bank Nifty pivot resistances: 54,899, 55,055 and 55,307.
Thursday’s close left the market weak despite substantial domestic buying. A recovery needs buying across more stocks and sectors; an opening bounce alone would offer limited confirmation.

Global Cues: US and European Markets
Previous session closing levels
| Index | October 8 close | Daily change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones | 51,231.70 | +51.83; +0.10% |
| S&P 500 | 7,765.36 | −36.41; −0.47% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,193.34 | −345.35; −1.25% |
| Germany DAX | 24,806.97 | −297.39; −1.18% |
| UK FTSE 100 | 10,441.60 | −16.90; −0.16% |
| France CAC 40 | 7,729.69 | −39.52; −0.51% |
US and European closing data show a mixed Wall Street session and declines across the three major European markets listed above.
Why Wall Street was mixed
Technology shares dragged Nasdaq lower, while the Dow managed a small gain.
A strong US 30-year bond auction helped ease pressure on Treasury yields. The 10-year yield retreated towards 5.23%, although that still leaves borrowing costs elevated.
India takeaway: Nasdaq weakness warrants caution, but Friday’s IT-stock reaction will also depend on company results. TCS has just reported, making earnings an important local influence.
European market takeaway
Germany’s decline was considerably larger than London’s.
For Indian traders, the overseas picture offers little evidence of a strong, market-wide improvement in risk appetite. A recovery at home will need support from domestic buying and stock-specific news.

GIFT Nifty: Important Update
- Morning high: 22,392.
- Morning low: 22,326.50.
- Provider’s previous-close reference: 22,363.50.
- Interpretation: A positive opening is possible, but the futures premium means the difference from Nifty’s cash close is not an exact gap-up forecast.
Commodities — Latest Available Update
International snapshot: approximately 7:07 AM IST. MCX figures below are previous-night quotes.
| Commodity | Latest available price | Change / quote basis |
| Brent crude — December | $103.56/barrel | −0.69%; morning futures-linked quote |
| WTI crude — November | $90.92/barrel | −0.62%; morning futures-linked quote |
| Spot gold | $4,169.89/troy ounce | +0.88% |
| Spot silver | $60.0175/troy ounce | +1.41% |
| Gold December futures reference | $4,194.87/troy ounce | +0.91% |
| Silver December futures reference | $60.270/troy ounce | +1.43% |
| MCX Gold — December | ₹1,49,735 per 10 grams | +0.42%; October 8, 11:29 PM IST |
| MCX Silver — December | ₹2,21,211 per kg | −1.05%; October 8, 11:29 PM IST |
International futures references are provider-derived quotes. Spot and futures prices represent different instruments. MCX has not opened for Friday’s session, so its figures should remain labelled as previous-night data.
Indian ADR and GDR Update
The following are October 8 regular-session closes, quoted in US dollars:
- Infosys ADR: $10.70, up 1.42%. A positive regular close, although the later after-hours quote slipped to $10.51 at 7:01 PM EDT.
- HDFC Bank ADR: $22.01, down 0.59%. The after-hours quote improved to $22.20 at 7:10 PM EDT.
- ICICI Bank ADR: $27.90, up 0.14%. A broadly steady overseas banking cue.
- Reliance Industries GDR, London RIGD line: $48.55, down 1.82%, quoted at 4:35 PM BST.
ADRs and GDRs are overseas-listed instruments linked to Indian shares. Their prices also reflect exchange rates, depositary ratios and local liquidity.
After-hours trading can be thin. Treat those quotes as additional context rather than a firm forecast for the Indian share price.
Oil and Geopolitics: The Main Global Risk
Oil rose sharply as Middle East supply concerns coincided with hurricane-related disruption in the US Gulf.
Reuters reported that Hurricane Isaias had prompted substantial production shutdowns. Comments from President Donald Trump ruling out an attack on Iran before the US midterm elections helped trim some of oil’s earlier gains.
For India, prolonged expensive crude can affect several parts of the economy:
- Importers need more dollars to pay for oil.
- Transport and manufacturing costs can rise.
- Airlines and other fuel-heavy businesses face margin pressure.
- Inflation can become harder to control.
- Interest-sensitive sectors may face a tougher demand environment.
These are possible effects, not a prediction that every company in these sectors will report lower profits.
Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex Support and Resistance
Nifty 50 levels
- Support: 22,180, then 22,000 and 21,700.
- Resistance: 22,400, followed by 22,600–22,700.
Bank Nifty levels
- Pivot supports: 54,395, 54,239 and 53,987.
- Pivot resistances: 54,899, 55,055 and 55,307.
These are the levels published in Moneycontrol’s October 9 trade setup.
Sensex levels
Using Thursday’s high, low and close, our calculated classic pivot map is:
- Central pivot: approximately 71,872.
- First support: approximately 71,049.
- First resistance: approximately 72,416.
- Previous-session low: 71,328, an additional price reference.
The calculation uses the average of the previous high, low and close. First support is twice that average minus the high; first resistance is twice the average minus the low. The inputs come from the closing dashboard.
A support level is an area to observe. It is not a promise that buyers will defend it.
Open Interest, Put-Call Ratio and India VIX
October 8 closing options snapshot:
- Nifty weekly Call OI: 22,700 — 1.252 crore; 22,500 — 1.251 crore; 22,400 — 1.06 crore.
- Nifty weekly Put OI: 22,000 — 1.03 crore; 21,800 — 67.51 lakh; 22,200 — 64.11 lakh.
- Bank Nifty monthly maximum Call OI: 56,000 — 12.43 lakh.
- Bank Nifty monthly maximum Put OI: 55,000 — 10.64 lakh.
- Nifty PCR: 0.73, down from 0.89.
- India VIX: 15.275, up 10.01%.
OI quantities are reproduced on the source’s reporting basis. Confirm the selected expiry and units in the exchange or broker chain before comparing them.
Open interest counts outstanding positions. It does not reveal, by itself, whether a trader is hedging, buying protection or making a directional bet.
The PCR compares Put OI with Call OI. A falling ratio can accompany a cautious market, but it is not a standalone sell signal.
Similarly, high Put OI at Bank Nifty 55,000 does not make that strike reliable support when the index is already below it. Price behaviour and changes in positions matter more than a static label.
Today’s trade setup — Moneycontrol: October 9, 2026
FII and DII Data
Provisional cash-market data for October 8 showed:
- FII/FPI net selling: ₹12,943.58 crore.
- DII net buying: ₹10,703.11 crore.
- Combined net flow: ₹2,240.47 crore of selling.
Domestic institutions absorbed more than 80% of foreign net selling, but the indices still fell sharply.
That is worth remembering when reading flow headlines. Strong DII buying can cushion a fall without being enough to reverse it.
Commodity and Currency Market Update
| Asset | Latest verified level | Quote basis |
|---|---|---|
| Brent crude | $104.28/barrel; +4.1% | October 8 settlement |
| WTI crude | $91.49/barrel; +3.6% | October 8 settlement |
| Spot gold | $4,140.47/troy ounce | Overnight snapshot retrieved before cutoff |
| Spot silver | $59.3900/troy ounce | Overnight snapshot retrieved before cutoff |
| MCX Gold December futures | ₹1,49,735/10 grams; +0.42% | October 8, 11:29 PM IST |
| MCX Silver December futures | ₹2,21,211/kg; −1.05% | October 8, 11:29 PM IST |
| USD/INR | Approximately ₹96.78/$ | Reuters-reported October 8 close |
Oil settlements, global metals, MCX quotes and the rupee reference use their respective sources and timestamps.
MCX figures are previous-night quotes, not Friday morning trades. Global spot prices, domestic futures and jewellery-shop rates are different measures.
The rupee also deserves attention. A weaker currency can keep domestic gold prices supported even when international gold barely moves. For import-heavy companies, it can add another layer of cost pressure.
Latest SEBI Rules and Their Market Impact
The latest circulars visible on SEBI’s official list at the research cutoff were dated October 7.
Two updates worth understanding are:
- Credit Risk-o-Meter for debt securities: an additional disclosure mechanism intended to help investors assess credit risk.
- Merchant banker appointment exemption: applies to private-placement debt issued by certain listed issuers, subject to the circular’s conditions.
Their direct relevance is to debt-market disclosures and issuance processes. They should not be presented as a fresh change to Friday’s equity trading hours, index expiries or retail option margins.
Two Growth Businesses to Watch After Q1 FY27
These are research watchlist names. Earnings growth and a favourable trading entry are separate questions.
1. Cummins India: Sales Grow, but Margins Need Attention
Cummins India’s June-quarter standalone figures showed:
- Sales: ₹3,375 crore, up 18% year-on-year.
- Domestic sales: ₹2,854 crore, up 22%.
- Exports: ₹521 crore, broadly flat.
- Profit before tax, before exceptional items: ₹721 crore, down 0.7%.
- Profit after tax: ₹543 crore.
The business grew sales, but profit did not keep pace. Management highlighted commodity costs and inflation as pressure points. tch whether demand growth translates into better margins in subsequent quarters. Revenue growth alone is not enough to justify any valuation.
Technical view: The verified BSE close was ₹4,759.40, down 2.27%, with a session low of ₹4,717.65 and high of ₹4,914.35.
Our rounded observation zones are ₹4,715–₹4,720 below and ₹4,870–₹4,915 above, based on recent BSE prices.
A sustained recovery through the upper zone would improve the immediate picture. A fresh break below the low would keep the stock under pressure.
Cummins India — Q1 FY27 earnings release
2. Max Healthcare: Expansion Supports Growth
Max Healthcare’s Q1 FY27 release reported:
- Gross revenue: ₹2,982 crore, up 16% year-on-year.
- Network operating EBITDA: ₹704 crore, up 15%.
- Network profit after tax: ₹357 crore, compared with ₹345 crore a year earlier.
These are the company’s network metrics; they should not be confused with a different consolidated reporting line.
Fundamental outlook: The next question is whether additional capacity produces enough revenue and cash flow to cover its costs. Investors should track occupancy, operating profitability and debt alongside growth.
Technical view: The verified BSE close was ₹876.30, down 3.29%. Thursday’s low was ₹870.30.
Our immediate observation zones are ₹870 below and ₹900–₹911 above, based on the latest two sessions.
The recent price pattern remains weak. A hospital business can grow while its shares correct, particularly when investors reassess the price they are willing to pay for future earnings.

TCS Results Add a Fresh Trigger
TCS’s September-quarter results deserve separate attention because they arrived after Thursday’s market close.
Reported revenue was ₹73,188 crore, up 1.3% quarter-on-quarter, while net profit was reported at ₹13,884 crore, up about 4% sequentially. A ₹12-per-share interim dividend was announced.
Friday’s reaction will depend on how investors read margins, order wins and management commentary—not simply whether reported profit increased.
IPO Updates: Listings Today and Upcoming Issues
According to Zerodha’s calendar, the following SME issues are scheduled to list on October 9:
- Paramount Syntex: issue band ₹119–₹127.
- TNA Solutions: ₹66–₹70.
- Acme India Industries: ₹186–₹196.
Upcoming subscriptions scheduled for October 13–15:
- HD Fire Protect, mainboard: ₹258–₹271.
- Ravita Engineering Services, SME: ₹105–₹112.
- Vaibhav Vyapaar, SME: ₹50–₹52.
The live section also includes Social Stock Exchange issues. These should not be grouped with ordinary equity IPOs offering potential listing gains.
Before applying, check the prospectus, cash flows, use of proceeds and valuation. SME liquidity can be limited, making an exit harder during a weak market.

Short-Term Trading and Long-Term Investment View
For short-term participants
A higher opening would be only the first test. The more useful question is whether buying continues after the early excitement fades.
- Watch whether Nifty holds its opening range.
- Look for broader participation rather than strength in one heavyweight.
- Check fresh OI changes instead of relying entirely on yesterday’s chain.
- Set position size around the loss you can tolerate.
- Remember that a stop-loss may execute at a worse price during a sharp gap.
For long-term investors
Start with the business and the price being paid for it.
Companies with manageable debt, reliable cash generation and sensible expansion plans deserve closer study. A phased approach can spread entry-price risk, but it does not remove the risk of loss.
Money needed for near-term expenses should not depend on a stock-market recovery. A diversified portfolio also reduces the damage that one disappointing company can cause.
Today’s Market Forecast: Five Points to Watch
- An opening recovery is possible: overnight GIFT Nifty offers encouragement, but the morning quote must confirm it.
- The first test is whether buyers stay active: a bounce that quickly loses its opening range would leave the market vulnerable.
- Oil remains the main external pressure: continued supply worries can affect sentiment even if equities initially rise.
- IT shares may react differently from the broader market: TCS results and overseas technology cues could produce stock-specific moves.
- Expect a selective, volatile session: wider participation and steadier bank shares would make a recovery more convincing.
