Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today, October 23, 2026: GIFT Nifty Signals Rebound—Can Nifty Reclaim 22,800?

Indian markets head into Friday with a possible recovery at the opening, but the global backdrop remains uncomfortable. GIFT Nifty is above Thursday’s domestic futures close, while expensive crude oil and weakness in overseas technology shares could limit buying interest.

For traders, the opening gap is only the first signal. The bigger question is whether Nifty can hold its early gains and move through the 22,800–22,900 resistance zone.

This Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today covers the previous session, global cues, derivatives positioning, commodities and two fresh Q2 earnings stories.

Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today: Indian Stock Market Post-Market Summary: October 22, 2026

Indian markets closed lower for the third consecutive session on Thursday. Rising crude oil prices, inflation concerns and selling in heavyweight stocks kept investors cautious. Nifty finished below 22,700, while Sensex lost 460 points.

Closing Market Snapshot

IndexClosing levelDaily change
Nifty 5022,687.65−123.70 points (−0.54%)
Sensex73,249.39−460.30 points (−0.62%)

Benchmark closes were reported by Moneycontrol and Financial Express; Bank Nifty’s closing reading was also displayed by Yahoo Finance.

Important Summary Data

Market indicatorOctober 22 readingWhat it means
Nifty Midcap 100−0.87%Midcaps underperformed Nifty
Nifty Smallcap 100−1.14%Smaller stocks faced sharper selling
India VIX15.76Near-term volatility remained in focus
FII cash-market activity−₹3,458.70 croreForeign institutions were net sellers
DII cash-market activity+₹2,891.32 croreDomestic institutions provided buying support
Combined FII–DII net flow−₹567.38 croreDomestic buying did not fully offset foreign selling

Institutional figures are reported provisional cash-market flows. Combined net flow is calculated from the FII and DII totals.

Why Did the Market Fall?

  • Expensive crude: Brent traded above $110 a barrel, increasing concerns about India’s import bill and inflation.
  • Weak heavyweight stocks: HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries weighed on the benchmarks.
  • Broad selling: Thirteen of sixteen major sector indices ended lower, with IT, energy and FMCG among the weak areas.
  • Foreign selling: FII outflows exceeded domestic institutional purchases, leaving a net selling balance in the reported cash-market figures.

Stocks That Offered Some Support

Bajaj Finance, Cipla, State Bank of India, Bajaj Auto and ICICI Bank were among the Nifty gainers, helping limit the benchmark’s decline.

What Traders Should Take From the Session

Bank Nifty held up better than the headline indices, but weaker midcap and smallcap performance showed that buying confidence remained limited.

For the next session, a stronger opening would need support from more sectors. Watch whether banking strength spreads to the broader market and whether crude prices ease before treating a bounce as a sustained recovery.

Global Cues: US and European Markets

Concerns around technology earnings and AI-related spending featured in the overnight market commentary. For Indian investors, this makes IT stocks worth watching closely at the opening, even where individual company results look encouraging.

Why GIFT Nifty can be red and still suggest a positive opening

At 7:02 a.m. IST, GIFT Nifty stood at 22,841, down 25.50 points against its own previous reference close.

However, Thursday’s domestic October Nifty futures closed at 22,711.30. That puts GIFT roughly 130 points higher on this comparison. It suggests scope for an opening recovery, although contract pricing differences mean it is not an exact prediction of the Nifty spot gap.

Global News and Geopolitical Developments

Oil supply concerns remain the main overseas risk for Indian markets.

Reuters reported continuing concern over Houthi attacks involving Saudi Arabia, alongside a Libyan pipeline closure affecting production. These developments have kept attention on potential supply disruption.

For India, the practical implications are straightforward:

  • Higher crude can increase the country’s import bill.
  • Fuel and transport costs can put pressure on business margins.
  • Airlines, paints and other oil-sensitive businesses deserve closer scrutiny.
  • A weaker rupee can add to the cost of dollar-priced imports.

These are possible transmission channels. Individual stock reactions will also depend on pricing power, hedging and company-specific news.

Indian ADR and GDR Updates

The latest verified US regular-session ADR readings for October 22 were mixed:

  • Infosys ADR: $13.22, up 3.69%.
  • Wipro ADR: $2.19, up 1.86%.
  • ICICI Bank ADR: $29.94, up 1.35%.
  • HDFC Bank ADR: $22.44, down 1.01%.

ADR moves offer an additional overnight signal. Currency movements, different trading hours and receipt ratios mean the Indian shares need not repeat those percentage changes.

GDR data: A fresh October 22 closing quote could not be verified from the available GDR source. Older prices have therefore been excluded from this report.

Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex: Support and Resistance

Nifty 50 levels

With Thursday’s close at 22,687.65, the immediate areas to monitor are:

  • Support: 22,550–22,600.
  • Lower support: 22,500.
  • Resistance: 22,800–22,900.
  • Next hurdle: 23,000.

The published technical setup places Nifty below important moving averages, with RSI around 43.98. That suggests momentum remains subdued despite the possibility of an opening bounce.

A sustained move above resistance would carry more weight than a brief opening spike. Conversely, losing the support zone could bring Thursday’s selling pressure back into focus.

Bank Nifty levels

For Bank Nifty, the published pivot levels are:

  • Support: 54,582, followed by 54,423.
  • Resistance: 55,098, followed by 55,257.
  • Higher resistance: 55,515.

The index’s relative strength is useful, but traders still need confirmation from major banking stocks and market breadth.

Sensex levels

Using Thursday’s high, low and close, the classical pivot calculation gives:

  • Pivot: approximately 73,325.
  • Support: approximately 72,929 and 72,609.
  • Resistance: approximately 73,645 and 74,041.

These are calculated reference levels, not price targets. The calculation uses the previous session’s high of 73,720.83, low of 73,005.11 and close of 73,249.39.

Open Interest, Put-Call Ratio and India VIX

Quantsapp’s October 22, 4:45 p.m. IST snapshot for the October 27 Nifty expiry showed:

  • Put-call ratio: 0.82.
  • Total call open interest: 23.29 crore in the provider’s displayed units.
  • Total put open interest: 19.12 crore.
  • Maximum pain: 22,850.
  • Highest call OI: 24,000 strike.
  • Highest put OI: 22,000 strike.

PCR compares put open interest with call open interest. A reading below one means call OI is larger in this particular dataset. It does not, by itself, reveal whether traders are buying or selling those options.

Also, the biggest OI strikes can sit far away from the current market. They should not automatically become intraday targets. Maximum pain is another positioning measure, not a promised expiry destination.

India VIX stood at 15.76, up around 0.6%. Traders should allow for intraday swings and avoid assuming that a higher opening will produce a steady upward session.

October 23 Trade Setup: Key Levels and Market Cues — Moneycontrol

FII and DII Activity

The reported cash-market institutional flows for October 22 were:

  • FII net selling: ₹3,458.70 crore.
  • DII net buying: ₹2,891.32 crore.
  • Combined net flow: approximately ₹567.38 crore of selling.

Domestic buying absorbed a large part of foreign selling, but not all of it. These figures provide context for market demand; they do not predict the next session’s direction.

Commodities: Crude Oil, Gold, Silver and MCX

The international readings below are futures snapshots. MCX figures are the last displayed Thursday-night quotes, before Friday’s commodity session.

CommodityLatest available quoteChange
Brent crude, December futures$113.80 per barrel+0.56%
WTI crude, December futures$100.00 per barrel+0.53%
International gold, December futures$4,028.30 per troy ounce−0.79%
International silver, December futures$54.345 per troy ounce−1.21%
MCX gold, December contract₹1,43,303 per 10 grams−1.90%
MCX silver, December contract₹1,99,917 per kg−4.42%

International quotes: Investing.com futures dashboard. MCX quotes: Upstox, October 22 at 11:29 p.m. IST. These MCX figures are last displayed prices, not Friday morning trades or necessarily the final settlement prices.

For equity traders, crude remains the more immediate macro concern. Gold and silver’s declines also show why precious metals should not be assumed to rise whenever geopolitical news worsens.

Currency Update: Rupee Under Pressure

The rupee’s latest verified domestic closing reference was ₹94.82 per US dollar, weaker by 44 paise on Thursday. A fresh Friday onshore opening quote was not available in the pre-market sources.

A weaker rupee can help some exporters when overseas earnings are converted into rupees. Importers may face higher costs. The actual earnings effect depends on each company’s currency hedges and foreign-currency expenses.

SEBI Rule Update: Changes Announced for December

SEBI has announced changes to the closing auction framework, trading timings and derivatives settlement methodology, with the principal changes scheduled from December 7, 2026.

Among the announced changes:

  • The closing auction session will run from 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
  • Expiring derivatives’ final settlement prices will use the last 30 minutes’ volume-weighted average price, replacing the CAS-based method described in the current framework.

These changes are not taking effect today. Their practical importance is for traders who manage positions near the close or hold contracts into expiry. They should review the applicable exchange and broker instructions before the implementation date.

Two Q2 Earnings Stocks to Watch

Sagility: Strong revenue growth, with currency helping the reported number

Sagility’s Q2 FY27 release reported:

  • Revenue: ₹2,032.1 crore, up 22.5% year-on-year.
  • Constant-currency revenue growth: 12.2%.
  • Reported profit after tax: ₹284.2 crore, up 13.3%.
  • Adjusted EBITDA margin: 26.3%.
  • Adjusted PAT: ₹325.4 crore, up 8.1%. th matters. It shows that the headline revenue increase includes a currency benefit.

Reported profit and adjusted profit are also different measures. Investors should read the adjustments before comparing the company with peers.

Technical reference: Thursday’s quoted price was ₹45.39, with a session range of ₹43.85–₹45.65. The upper end is an immediate breakout reference; the lower end is a nearby risk marker. These are previous-day boundaries, not established long-term support and resistance.

Outlook: The growth figures justify attention. For a longer holding period, focus on cash conversion, customer concentration and whether growth continues without relying heavily on currency movements.

Quarterly Results and Investor Presentations — Official Website

Colgate-Palmolive India: Sales improve, but margins need attention

Colgate’s reported Q2 figures, rounded in the earnings coverage, included:

  • Revenue: approximately ₹1,706 crore, up 12.3%.
  • Net profit: approximately ₹342 crore, up 4.3%.
  • EBITDA: approximately ₹473 crore, up 1.7%.
  • EBITDA margin: 27.8%, compared with 30.6% a year earlier.

This is a consumer growth story with a clear qualification: sales rose faster than earnings. Investors need to assess whether demand growth can eventually produce better profit growth.

Technical reference: The October 22 closing quote was approximately ₹1,685. Thursday’s low near ₹1,678 and high near ₹1,720 provide immediate reference points. Trading near the lower end calls for patience.

Outlook: A recovery above the recent trading range would improve the short-term picture. For long-term investors, margin recovery and the valuation paid remain more useful than a dividend headline alone.

Short-Term Trading and Long-Term Investing Approach

For short-term traders

  • Let the opening range develop before treating the GIFT signal as confirmed.
  • Watch whether Nifty holds above its early-session low.
  • Use position sizes that allow for a failed breakout.
  • Check the exact options expiry when comparing PCR and open interest.
  • Avoid carrying an intraday idea into a longer holding simply because the trade moves against you.

For long-term investors

A weak market can create opportunities, but a lower share price does not automatically mean a cheaper business.

Review debt, operating cash flow, earnings quality and valuation together. Buying in stages can reduce dependence on choosing one perfect entry price. Money needed for near-term expenses should not depend on an equity-market recovery.

Today’s Market Forecast: Five Things to Watch

  • Opening recovery is possible: GIFT Nifty’s premium to Thursday’s domestic futures close supports a rebound scenario, subject to fresh moves before the opening.
  • Nifty faces a test at 22,800–22,900: Holding above this area would improve the recovery’s credibility.
  • The 22,550–22,600 support zone matters: A sustained break could put 22,500 back in focus.
  • Banks and earnings reactions may decide follow-through: Watch Bank Nifty near 55,100 and the market response to fresh Q2 announcements.
  • Oil and overseas technology weakness remain risks: A higher opening could fade if global pressure intensifies.
