Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today, October 19: GIFT Nifty Steady—Can Nifty Hold 23,000?
Indian shares enter Monday after a two-session recovery, but the opening cues are mixed. GIFT Nifty is slightly higher against its own previous close, Asian technology markets remain under pressure, and bank earnings will get their first domestic-market reaction today.
There is another reason to stay alert: today is the holiday-adjusted Nifty weekly expiry, ahead of Tuesday’s Dussehra market holiday.
This Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today covers the latest available morning snapshots and Friday’s closing data. Sunday was a non-trading day, so the previous Indian session was 16 October.
Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today: The Opening View
- Opening cue: Broadly flat when GIFT Nifty is compared with domestic Nifty futures.
- Domestic trigger: The response to private-bank September-quarter results.
- Immediate test: Whether Nifty retains 23,000 after the opening swings.
- Global pressure: Weakness in technology-heavy Asian markets.
- Potential relief: Softer crude, although oil remains expensive for India.
A green futures screen alone does not settle the day’s direction. Watch whether buying spreads beyond a few heavyweight shares.
Indian Stock Market Closing Summary: 16 October 2026
Indian markets ended Friday higher, supported by buying in IT shares. Nifty closed above 23,100, while Sensex gained nearly 414 points. Banking stocks finished almost flat.
| Index / Indicator | Closing level | Daily change |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,146.15 | +148.80 (+0.65%) |
| BSE Sensex | 74,729.27 | +413.66 (+0.56%) |
| Bank Nifty | 55,844.00 | +33.50 (+0.06%) |
| India VIX | 14.02 | Volatility reference |
| Nifty put-call ratio | 1.21 | Down from 1.37 |
Session High and Low
| Index | Day’s high | Day’s low |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 23,149.85 | 22,913.80 |
| Sensex | 74,778.78 | 74,012.99 |
Nifty finished just 3.70 points below its session high, showing that buyers retained control towards the close.
FII and DII Activity
| Investor category | Net cash-market activity | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| FIIs / FPIs | Approximately ₹1,166 crore | Net buying |
| DIIs | Approximately ₹3,661 crore | Net selling |
Important Takeaways
- IT led the recovery: Buying in technology shares helped the benchmarks extend their gains.
- Banks lagged: Bank Nifty’s modest 0.06% rise showed that banking participation remained limited.
- Foreign investors turned buyers: Friday’s positive FII flow offered support, although one session does not confirm a lasting change in sentiment.
- Options positioning remained mixed: Nifty’s PCR declined to 1.21 despite the index rising. The largest reported weekly call-OI concentration was at 23,500, while put OI was highest at 22,700.
- Rupee reference: The currency ended at ₹94.96 per US dollar, completing a weekly gain of around 2%.
What Friday’s Close Means for the Next Session
The close near the day’s high supports a cautiously positive reading. Nifty’s 23,000–22,900 zone is the nearby support area, while 23,300–23,350 is the next resistance zone. A broader recovery would be more convincing if banks join the advance. These are reference levels, not assured turning points.
Global Cues: US and European Markets
These are Friday, 16 October closing readings. Monday’s US futures are a separate market signal.
| Index | Latest completed-session level | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones | 52,002.41 | −0.34% |
| S&P 500 | 7,659.44 | −1.09% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,140.03 | −2.14% |
| FTSE 100 | 10,881.90 | +0.38% |
| Germany DAX | 25,622.61 | +0.95% |
| France CAC 40 | 7,956.70 | +0.28% |
| Euro Stoxx 50 | 6,204.23 | +0.58% |
The gap between US technology shares and European benchmarks shows why calling all global markets weak would be too broad. Indian IT traders have overseas technology sentiment to watch, while banks have fresh domestic results to assess.

The overseas dashboard displays provider-clock timestamps without an explicit timezone. These are therefore retrieved morning snapshots rather than exact IST ticks. The comments describe market context, not proven causes for every move.
Why Green GIFT Nifty Does Not Automatically Mean a Gap-Up
GIFT Nifty’s 23,114.50 reading is 4.70 points below Friday’s domestic Nifty futures close of 23,119.20. That is a broadly flat indication.
Global News and Geopolitical Developments
Reuters’ early Monday report linked weaker Asian shares to concerns about AI investment costs and financing conditions. It also reported oil easing after partial US relaxation of Russia sanctions, while a tanker incident in the Strait of Hormuz kept supply risks in view. US equity futures were recovering in that earlier snapshot.
For Indian readers, the transmission is fairly direct:
- Lower oil can reduce pressure on import costs and inflation.
- Fresh shipping disruption can reverse that relief quickly.
- Weak technology sentiment can affect IT shares despite encouraging company results.
- Higher global borrowing costs can influence valuations and foreign flows.
Treat geopolitical headlines as developing events. Their market impact depends on whether they change actual supply, transport costs or policy.
Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex: Support and Resistance
These are reference zones, not guaranteed turning points.
Nifty 50
- Last close: 23,146.15.
- Support: 23,000–22,900; then 22,800.
- Resistance: 23,300–23,350; then 23,500.
Holding support would leave room for recovery. A sustained break below it would weaken that view.
Bank Nifty
- Last close: 55,844.
- Support references: 55,610 and 55,500.
- Resistance references: 55,964–56,073, followed by 56,250.
These Nifty and Bank Nifty zones come from the pre-session technical review.
Sensex
Using Friday’s high of 74,778.78, low of 74,012.99 and close of 74,729.27:
- Calculated pivot: About 74,507.
- Calculated support: About 74,235 and 73,741.
- Calculated resistance: About 75,001 and 75,273.
These are classical pivot calculations using (high + low + close) ÷ 3, not broker targets.
Open Interest, Put-Call Ratio and India VIX
Friday’s published derivatives snapshot showed:
- Nifty PCR: 1.21, down from 1.37.
- Largest Nifty call-OI concentration: 23,500.
- Largest Nifty put-OI concentration: 22,700.
- Bank Nifty monthly call/put concentrations: 56,000 and 55,000 respectively.
- India VIX: 14.02.
PCR compares outstanding puts with calls. It does not tell us that every put represents bullish selling: each contract has both a buyer and a seller.
OI concentrations can shift quickly on expiry day. A large put position is a reference to monitor, not a promise that the market cannot fall through that strike.
Since today is the adjusted weekly expiry, check broker square-off deadlines before carrying positions into the closing period.
Nifty Expiry Today: Important Data for Traders — 19 October 2026
Nifty’s weekly expiry falls today, Monday, 19 October, because Tuesday is the Dussehra trading holiday.

| Next support | 22,800 | Relevant if nearby support fails |
| Technical resistance | 23,300–23,350 | Recovery faces a test here |
| Further resistance | 23,500 | Higher resistance reference |

Expiry-Specific Options Snapshot
Quantsapp explicitly identifies the 19 October expiry, with data timestamped 16 October, 4:45 pm IST.
| Options indicator | Reported reading | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| OI-based put-call ratio | 1.32 | More outstanding puts than calls |
| Max pain | 23,050 | Model reference, not a closing prediction |
| Largest call-OI strike | 24,000 | Distant positioning concentration |
| Largest put-OI strike | 22,000 | Distant positioning concentration |
| 23,500 call OI | 1.36 crore* | Closer overhead concentration |
| 23,000 put OI | 1.12 crore* | Nearby positioning to monitor |
| Addition to 23,100 put OI | 78.8 lakh* | Recheck whether positions remain after opening |
OI quantities are reproduced in the provider’s displayed units; do not interpret them as numbers of lots without checking the feed’s convention
Clarification on the earlier PCR: The 1.21 figure previously shared came from Moneycontrol’s weekly-options review. Quantsapp reports 1.32 for the explicitly labelled 19 October expiry. The sources disagree, so avoid combining their totals. Confirm the expiry, timestamp and strike coverage in your trading terminal.
What Traders Should Watch After Opening
- Price holding above Friday’s high: A sustained move above 23,150 would be more constructive than a brief opening spike.
- Behaviour around 23,000: Watch price, volume and fresh put-OI changes together. Existing OI alone cannot establish support.
- Break below 22,900: This would weaken the recovery setup and bring 22,800 into focus.
- Acceptance above 23,350: This would strengthen the case for testing 23,500; a failed breakout would argue for caution.
- Changes in option premiums: Near expiry, time value can disappear quickly, while small index moves can sharply change near-the-money premiums.
These are conditional scenarios, not entry instructions or guaranteed targets.

Expiry-Day Execution Reminders
- Select the 19 October 2026 contract before placing an order.
- Check bid–ask spreads and broker square-off deadlines.
- Size positions by the potential loss, not by how cheap the premium looks.
- Do not assume the index must close near max pain.
- Refresh the option chain after trading starts; Friday’s positions can unwind quickly.
FII and DII Activity
Friday’s provisional cash-market figures showed approximately:
- FII/FPI net buying: ₹1,166 crore.
- DII net selling: ₹3,661 crore.
One buying session from foreign investors is encouraging, but it does not establish a lasting reversal.
These figures describe cash-market activity. They should not be confused with foreign investors’ futures positions or total cross-asset flows.
Indian ADR and GDR Updates
ADRs: Friday’s US Session
- Infosys: $12.24, up 0.91%; after-hours $12.22.
- Wipro: $1.95, up 4.28%.
- ICICI Bank: $29.99, up 1.87%; after-hours $29.98.
- HDFC Bank: $23.84, up 1.32%; after-hours $23.60
The bank ADR closes preceded Saturday’s earnings announcements. They are not a market verdict on those weekend results.
GDRs: Latest Dated Reference Quotes
Goodreturns’ feed, labelled 16 October day-end, displayed:
- Axis Bank: $66.40.
- GAIL: $10.40.
- Larsen & Toubro: $38.15.
- Mahindra & Mahindra: $30.50.
- Reliance Industries: $51.60.
- State Bank of India: $102.60.
These are third-party reference quotes, not independently verified exchange execution prices. The feed does not provide enough detail to establish trading freshness or liquidity for each receipt.
Commodities: Crude Oil, Gold, Silver and MCX
| Contract | Latest available quote | Change / timing |
|---|---|---|
| Brent, December 2026 | $107.97/barrel | −1.57%; overseas morning snapshot |
| WTI, December 2026 | $97.59/barrel | −1.44%; overseas morning snapshot |
| Gold, December 2026 | $4,191.42/troy ounce | +0.25%; overseas morning snapshot |
| Silver, December 2026 | $57.520/troy ounce | +0.38%; overseas morning snapshot |
| MCX Gold, December | ₹1,48,000/10 grams | +0.35%; 16 Oct, 11:29 pm IST |
| MCX Silver, December | ₹2,11,418/kg | +0.36%; 16 Oct, 11:29 pm IST |
International quotes are provider-derived readings. MCX prices are Friday’s latest available quotes, not Monday morning trades.
Compare identical contracts when checking another website. Different delivery months can have different prices.
Domestic gold and silver also respond to the rupee, which means their moves need not match dollar prices.
Currency Update: Rupee and Dollar
The rupee finished Friday at 94.96 per US dollar, after gaining roughly 2% over the week, according to Reuters. That is the latest completed domestic-session reference, not a fresh Monday spot quote.
The retrieved overseas dollar-index snapshot was around 101.66.
Watch whether the rupee retains its improvement after domestic trading begins. Currency strength can ease imported costs, but exporters’ earnings sensitivity varies with hedging and overseas expenses.
New SEBI Rules: What Changes for Traders?
SEBI’s 15 October circular revises closing-auction arrangements and derivatives settlement methodology.
The announced framework uses the final 30 minutes of continuous-market VWAP for expiring derivatives, with the relevant changes effective 7 December 2026. The closing auction continues to determine applicable cash-equity closing prices.
For traders, the distinction matters: the December settlement changes are not today’s rules. Follow the currently applicable exchange process for this expiry.
Two Q2 FY27 Earnings Stocks to Track
These are research watchlist candidates, not buy calls.
1. ICICI Bank: Profit Growth With a Margin Question
The bank’s September-quarter release reported:
- Standalone net profit: ₹14,843 crore, up 20.1% year-on-year.
- Net interest income: ₹25,339 crore, up 17.7%.
- Net interest margin: 4.18%, against 4.36% in the preceding quarter.
- Deposit growth: 27.1%; excluding FCNR(B) deposits, 17%.
The earnings growth is encouraging, but the margin decline deserves attention. NIM measures the spread earned on interest-bearing assets, so a lower reading can offset some benefit from a larger loan book.
Technical reference: Friday’s NSE close was ₹1,397, with a ₹1,380–₹1,398.80 range. Those boundaries offer immediate price references after the results. A sustained move above the high would be more constructive than an opening jump that quickly fades.
Outlook: Track the quality of future growth, funding costs and margin stabilisation. Profit growth alone does not answer whether the share is attractively valued.

2. HCLTech: Better Profit, But Read the Currency Detail
HCLTech’s Q2 FY27 release showed:
- Revenue: ₹35,620 crore, up 11.5% year-on-year.
- Net profit: ₹5,132 crore, up 21.2%.
- EBIT margin: 18.2%.
- Constant-currency revenue growth: 2.6% year-on-year.
- FY27 constant-currency revenue-growth guidance: 2.5%–4%.
The difference between rupee growth and constant-currency growth matters. A company can report faster growth in rupees partly because exchange rates have changed. Investors should also assess underlying client spending.
Technical reference: Friday’s NSE close was ₹1,380, up 1.47%, with a high of ₹1,384.80 and low of ₹1,348.60. These provide immediate resistance and support references, subject to fresh price action.
Outlook: Watch deal conversion, cash generation and the ability to maintain margins. A good reported quarter does not remove the risk of slower future demand.

IPO Updates: Applications and Upcoming Listings
- Closing today: Zetwerk, ₹143–₹151; Tonbo Imaging, ₹665–₹700; Sahajanand Medical Technologies, ₹327–₹344; Bonfiglioli Transmissions, ₹558–₹586.
- Opening 21–23 October: Jio Platforms, ₹1,065–₹1,119; Paras Healthcare, ₹660–₹693.
- Listing scheduled 21 October: HD Fire Protect.
- Listing scheduled 22 October: Fusion CX.
- Listing scheduled 23 October: The four mainboard offers closing today.
Check the final offer document and application deadline before acting. An IPO’s valuation, debt and use of proceeds matter more than an unofficial grey-market premium. Listing gains are not assured.

Short-Term and Long-Term Investment Approach
For Short-Term Participants
- Let the opening range develop before treating a price spike as a breakout.
- Use position sizes that allow for expiry-day swings.
- Recheck OI after the market opens instead of relying entirely on Friday’s map.
- Keep a clear exit condition; a support level can fail.
For Long-Term Investors
- Read cash-flow statements alongside headline profit growth.
- Compare valuation with the company’s earnings prospects.
- Spread planned purchases over time where that suits your goals and risk tolerance.
- Keep money needed soon outside volatile equity positions.
A short-term trade and a long-term investment need different reasons for holding. Turning a losing trade into an “investment” without reviewing the business usually makes the decision harder.
Today’s Market Forecast: Five Points to Watch
- A muted opening is the base case: GIFT Nifty is close to Friday’s domestic futures level.
- Nifty’s 23,000 area matters: Holding it would support the recovery view; losing it would weaken that view.
- Banks could decide the next move: Watch the response to weekend results and Bank Nifty’s behaviour near 56,000.
- Expiry may sharpen intraday swings: Avoid treating early moves or Friday’s OI as fixed signals.
- Oil and Asian sentiment remain swing factors: Continued oil relief would help, while fresh geopolitical stress could reverse the mood.
