Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today, October 15: GIFT Nifty Recovers
Indian shares head into Thursday with a cautious opening signal. GIFT Nifty’s overnight reading points lower, while the latest US session brought sharper losses in technology shares. Expensive crude remains another concern for Indian investors.
The first question is straightforward: can buyers defend Nifty’s 22,500 area? A recovery needs participation from banks and other heavyweight shares, rather than a brief bounce in a handful of stocks.
Indian Markets Pre Market Report Today: Opening Checklist
- GIFT Nifty: 22,545.00, down 77.50 points or 0.34%; provider timestamp 15 October, 3:04 am.
- Opening comparison: About 104 points below the reported 14 October onshore Nifty futures close of 22,648.50. This is an indication, not a guaranteed opening gap.
- Domestic reference: Nifty’s 22,500 support area.
- Overnight concern: US inflation and weakness in technology shares.
- Earnings watch: Canara Bank and Tata Technologies.
Previous Session:Indian Stock Market Post-Market Summary — 14 October 2026
Indian markets closed lower on Wednesday as profit booking, elevated crude prices and foreign selling weighed on sentiment. Buying in IT and FMCG shares helped limit the decline.
Closing Market Snapshot
| Indicator | Closing level | Daily change |
| Nifty 50 | 22,622.70 | −99.25 points (−0.44%) |
| Sensex | 72,781.89 | −251.89 points (−0.34%) |
| Bank Nifty | 55,316.00 | −165.05 points (−0.30%) |
| USD/INR | ₹95.15 per dollar | Rupee strengthened 13 paise |
Nifty recovered slightly from its intraday low of 22,558.95, but finished below 22,650.
Institutional Flows and Market Sentiment
| Indicator | Reported data | What it means |
| FII cash-market flow | −₹1,857.44 crore | Foreign institutions remained net sellers |
| DII cash-market flow | +₹2,670.44 crore | Domestic institutions provided buying support |
| Combined institutional flow | +₹813.00 crore | Calculated net buying; indices still declined |
| India VIX | 14.62; +3.58% | Expected volatility increased |
| Nifty put-call ratio | 0.91, versus 1.16 | Options positioning became more cautious |
Institutional flows are provisional. PCR and VIX are previous-session readings, not live figures.
Important Highlights
- Sector support: IT and FMCG attracted buying.
- Weak pockets: Pharma, private banks, auto, metals and realty faced selling.
- Notable gainers: Infosys, Nestlé India, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consumer and Coal India.
- Notable losers: Shriram Finance, HDFC Life, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance and SBI Life.
- Broader market: Midcap and smallcap indices finished with marginal losses.
Global Cues: US and European Indices
| Index | Latest completed-session reference | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones | 51,621.48 | −0.09% |
| S&P 500* | 7,719.54 | −1.10% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,692.87 | −1.88% |
| Germany DAX* | 25,298.61 | +0.15% |
| UK FTSE 100* | 10,724.86 | +0.70% |
| France CAC 40 | 7,873.11 | +0.58% |
The gap between the Dow and Nasdaq matters for India. Technology shares faced greater pressure, making the opening response in Indian IT worth watching.
European gains offer some balance, but they do not remove the overnight US risk signal.
Global Market Cues — US, European and Asian Indices
US Inflation: Why Indian Investors Should Care
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported September consumer inflation of 0.6% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, stood at 2.6% year-on-year. Gasoline prices rose 9.1% during the month.
Persistently high inflation can keep interest-rate expectations elevated. For Indian shares, the possible effects include pressure on valuations and changes in foreign investor appetite.
This is a macroeconomic risk, not a reason to assume every Indian business will report weaker earnings.
Asian Markets and GIFT Nifty — 15 October 2026
Morning update: Asian shares are trading sharply lower, while GIFT Nifty has recovered from its overnight reading. Quotes below are the latest retrieved snapshots; provider timestamps differ.
Asian Markets
| Index | Latest level | Change |
| Japan Nikkei 225* | 64,614.00 | −4.62% |
| South Korea KOSPI | 5,542.51 | −7.76% |
| Taiwan Weighted | 47,296.57 | −2.73% |
| Hong Kong Hang Seng* | 24,076.00 | −0.98% |
| Shanghai Composite | 3,710.02 | −1.52% |
| Australia ASX 200 | 8,735.90 | +0.09% |
Source snapshot shows timestamps around 21:36–21:56 in its displayed timezone, which could not be independently confirmed. These are indicative intraday readings, not closing prices. Asterisks denote provider-derived values.
Why markets are falling: Hotter US inflation has increased interest-rate concerns, while selling in semiconductor and AI-linked shares is putting particular pressure on South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
GIFT Nifty: Latest Morning Reading
| Indicator | Latest data | What it indicates |
| GIFT Nifty | 22,617.00 | Updated 7:50 am IST, 15 October |
| Session change | +69.00 points (+0.31%) | Higher against its own reference close |
| Session range | 22,525–22,642 | Recovered from the session low |
| Compared with previous onshore Nifty futures | About 32 points lower | Mildly negative opening indication |
Why a positive GIFT change can still signal a softer opening: Its displayed gain uses a reference close of 22,548. The previous onshore Nifty futures reading was 22,648.50—above the current GIFT quote. The comparison is indicative, not a guaranteed opening gap.
Commodities: Crude Oil, Gold and Silver
| Commodity | Latest indicative price | Change |
| Brent crude — December futures* | $104.49/barrel | −1.48% |
| WTI crude — November futures* | $94.03/barrel | −1.11% |
| Gold — international spot | $4,139.21/troy ounce | +0.83% |
| Silver — international spot | $56.0565/troy ounce | +0.75% |
| Gold — December futures* | $4,158.62/troy ounce | +1.23% |
| Silver — December futures* | $56.203/troy ounce | +0.58% |
Provider-derived futures quotes. The commodity feed displays timestamps around 22:08 in its own timezone; these should not be labelled as exact 7:52 am IST prices.
What matters for India:
- Lower crude: Offers some relief to oil-import costs, although prices remain elevated.
- Higher gold: Provides a contrast to the sharp equity sell-off.
- Higher silver: The international rebound does not automatically translate into an identical MCX move.
MCX Gold and Silver: Reference Prices Only
MCX has not opened for the 15 October session at this update.
| Contract | Displayed reference price | Displayed change |
| MCX Gold — December | ₹1,45,850 per 10 grams | −1.75% |
| MCX Silver — December | ₹2,07,990 per kg | −5.12% |
These are carried-over provider readings, not live morning prices or newly verified settlements. The gold page currently displays an invalid timestamp, so its price should be checked again after the market opens.
Indian market takeaway: GIFT Nifty’s recovery and softer crude offer some support, but the sharp Asian technology sell-off keeps the opening outlook cautious.
Indian ADR Update
The following Indian ADR prices are 14 October US regular-session closes, in US dollars:
- Infosys: $11.48, up 0.70%.
- Wipro: $1.80, unchanged.
- ICICI Bank: $28.27, down 0.95%.
- HDFC Bank: $22.63, down 0.57%.
Infosys showed relative strength despite the wider US technology decline. Banking ADRs were softer.
ADR moves are useful clues, but currency movements and different trading hours mean Indian shares need not repeat them exactly.
Geopolitical Developments: Oil Supply Risk Remains in Focus
Reuters reported renewed attacks involving Middle East and threats to shipping around the Gulf. The market concern is possible disruption to energy supplies and transport routes.
For India, the transmission is fairly direct: sustained expensive oil can raise import costs and put pressure on fuel-sensitive businesses.
Airlines, paints and logistics companies deserve attention, but their actual earnings impact depends on hedging, pricing power and how long input costs stay high. Avoid treating every oil headline as an automatic sector-wide trading signal.
Nifty and Bank Nifty: Support and Resistance
These are reference zones for planning. They are not assured reversal points.
Nifty 50
- Support: 22,500, followed by 22,300–22,200.
- Nearby resistance: 22,723–22,769.
- Larger hurdle: Around 22,850.
Bank Nifty
- Support: 55,194, 55,082 and 54,900.
- Resistance: 55,558, 55,671 and 55,853.
Sensex Expiry Day: Important Data for Traders — 15 October 2026
Today is the scheduled Sensex weekly options expiry. The listed lot size is 20 units. Confirm the 15 October 2026 contract in your broker’s order window before trading.
Early-morning reference: the figures below use the 14 October session.
Sensex Levels to Watch
| Indicator | Level / data | Trading relevance |
| Previous close | 72,781.89 | Starting reference for today |
| Previous change | −251.89 points (−0.34%) | Weak previous-session close |
| Previous high | 73,195.26 | Watch whether a recovery clears this |
| Previous low | 72,578.75 | Watch for buying or a sustained breakdown |
| Calculated pivot | 72,852 | Reference for intraday positioning |
| Calculated supports | 72,509 / 72,235 | Possible downside reaction areas |
| Calculated resistances | 73,125 / 73,468 | Possible upside reaction areas |
| Nearest 100-point strike to previous close | 72,800 | Opening ATM strike may change |
Calculation note: Pivot, support and resistance use the classic formula based on the previous high, low and close. They are calculated reference levels—not option-OI barriers or guaranteed reversal points.
Option-Chain Data to Check After the Open
| Data point | Current verification status | Why traders watch it |
| Highest call open interest | Not verified | Identifies concentrated call positions |
| Highest put open interest | Not verified | Identifies concentrated put positions |
| Change in OI | Not verified | Shows where positions are increasing or reducing |
| Sensex-specific PCR | Not verified | Compares put OI with call OI for the selected expiry |
| Max pain | Not verified | Positioning estimate; not a reliable expiry target |
| ATM straddle premium | Requires live call and put quotes | Shows the combined premium at the same strike |
| Bid–ask spread and volume | Requires live quotes | Helps assess liquidity and execution cost |
Do not use Nifty’s PCR of 0.91 as Sensex PCR. They refer to different option chains. Likewise, a high-OI strike alone does not establish support or resistance.
What One Lot Means
With 20 units per lot:
- A ₹100 option premium costs ₹2,000 per lot, before charges.
- A 10-point premium movement changes a one-lot position’s value by ₹200.
- A 50-point premium movement changes it by ₹1,000.
These calculations refer to option premium movements, not Sensex index movements. Selling an option requires margin; the premium received is not the maximum possible loss.
Five Practical Expiry-Day Checks
- Watch the opening range: Yesterday’s levels may lose relevance after a large gap.
- Check the exact expiry: Select 15 October, rather than a later weekly or monthly contract.
- Track premium behaviour: Time value can erode quickly, while near-the-money premiums can also swing sharply.
- Check execution costs: A cheap option with a wide bid–ask spread may be difficult to exit.
- Know your broker’s cut-off: Verify square-off policies and settlement charges before holding positions late into expiry.
Closing-session risk deserves attention: Reuters reported unusually sharp Sensex option-premium swings during a September expiry’s closing auction. That does not predict today’s outcome, but it shows why a quiet afternoon need not mean a quiet finish.
Open Interest, Put-Call Ratio and India VIX
The reported 14 October closing derivatives snapshot showed:
- Nifty PCR: 0.91, down from 1.16.
- India VIX: 14.62, up 3.58%.
- Largest Nifty call OI: 23,000 strike; about 1.12 crore reported contracts.
- Largest Nifty put OI: 22,500 strike; about 68.67 lakh.
- Bank Nifty monthly concentrations: Calls at 56,000 and puts at 55,000.
The report described Nifty weekly and Bank Nifty monthly options, but the accessible text did not specify exact expiry dates. These are closing snapshots, not live option-chain readings.
PCR compares put and call open interest. A falling ratio can reflect changing positioning; it does not prove that prices must fall.
VIX measures expected volatility, not market direction. Options positions can change quickly after the opening bell.
Today’s Trade Setup — October 15: Nifty, Bank Nifty and Derivatives
FII and DII Activity: October 14
Reported provisional cash-market figures were:
- FII net selling: ₹1,857.44 crore.
- DII net buying: ₹2,670.44 crore.
- Combined net institutional buying: ₹813.00 crore, calculated from those figures.
Domestic buying exceeded foreign selling, yet benchmark indices declined. Net flows do not capture the timing of trades or which heavyweight stocks received the money.
Commodities: Crude Oil, Gold, Silver and MCX
| Instrument | Latest retrieved reference | Reported change |
|---|---|---|
| Brent futures, December | $106.11/barrel | +0.40% |
| WTI futures, November | $94.81/barrel | −0.29% |
| International spot gold | $4,104.07/troy ounce | −0.03% |
| International spot silver | $55.615/troy ounce | −0.04% |
| MCX Gold futures, December | ₹1,45,850/10 grams | −1.75% |
| MCX Silver futures, December | ₹2,07,990/kg | −5.12% |
The sharp MCX silver decline shows why international spot prices and Indian futures should not be compared using percentage change alone. Contract expiry, currency changes and the previous-close reference can all differ.
Currency Update: USD/INR
The rupee closed on 14 October at ₹95.15 per US dollar, strengthening 13 paise from ₹95.28.
A fresh 15 October onshore spot opening quote was not available for this edition. Watch whether the rupee holds its improvement when domestic trading resumes, especially with oil still expensive.
Two Q2 FY27 Earnings Stocks to Watch
These are earnings-led research candidates, not guaranteed growth winners or buy calls.
Canara Bank: Better Interest Income and Asset Quality
Reported Q2 FY27 standalone figures:
- Net profit: ₹5,175 crore, up about 8.4% year-on-year.
- Net interest income: ₹11,005 crore, up about 20.4%.
- Gross NPA ratio: 1.33%, compared with 2.35%.
- Net interest margin: 2.55%, against 2.50%.
Higher interest income and fewer bad loans support the earnings story. However, return on assets slipped to 1.05% from 1.10%, so the improvement was not uniform.
What to examine next: Deposit costs, loan growth and whether lower credit costs remain sustainable. A stronger quarter does not automatically mean the share is attractively valued.
Technical reference: The stock closed at ₹124.76, up 3.59%. The previous session’s ₹126.47 high is an immediate upside reference; ₹119.62 is the corresponding downside reference. These are observed session extremes, not independently established support and resistance zones.
Outlook: Further progress in profitability would strengthen the case. After a sharp daily rise, the price paid still matters.
Canara Bank Q2 Results — Profit, Interest Income and Asset Quality
Tata Technologies: Revenue Growth Outpaces Profit Growth
Reported Q2 FY27 consolidated figures:
- Revenue: ₹1,698.80 crore, up about 28.4%.
- Net profit: ₹171.44 crore, up about 3.6%.
- EBITDA: ₹273.3 crore, up about 31.5%.
- EBITDA margin: 16.1%, compared with 15.7%.
Revenue and operating earnings grew faster than net profit. Investors should read the financial statement notes to understand that difference instead of judging the quarter only by the sales headline.
Technical reference: The 14 October close was ₹745.55, up 0.25%, with a high of ₹758.25 and low of ₹736.50. These provide initial reference points, but an earnings-driven gap can quickly make them less useful.
The results coverage appeared after the cash-market close. Thursday’s price response will therefore matter more than Wednesday’s small gain.
Outlook: Watch whether revenue growth converts into sustained cash generation and stronger net earnings. For a longer holding period, customer concentration and the durability of engineering spending also deserve review.

Recent SEBI Updates and Their Practical Impact
Two recent verified circulars are relevant to retail readers:
- Credit Risk-o-Meter, dated 7 October: SEBI introduced an additional disclosure mechanism for debt securities. Its purpose is better risk communication; a disclosure label does not make a bond risk-free.
- Project Jagrook, dated 1 October: The circular concerns investor-awareness messages on stockbrokers’ apps and websites. Readers may encounter more prominent educational messages while using trading platforms.
These are dated regulatory updates, not newly announced rules for this morning. Their direct relevance is investor disclosure and awareness; they should not be presented as a reason for an immediate index rally.
IPO Updates: Opening, Ongoing and Closing Issues
Zerodha’s IPO calendar lists:
- Zetwerk: 15–19 October; ₹143–151.
- Tonbo Imaging: 15–19 October; ₹665–700.
- Sahajanand Medical: 15–19 October; ₹327–344.
- Bonfiglioli: 15–19 October; ₹558–586.
- HD Fire Protect: 13–15 October; ₹258–271; scheduled to close today.
- Fusion CX: 14–16 October; ₹275–289.
- Ravita, SME: 14–16 October; ₹105–112.
These are calendar details, not subscription figures. Check the final offer document and broker application window before applying.
For beginners, the useful questions are simple: where will the money go, how much debt does the business carry, and is the asking valuation reasonable? Grey-market chatter cannot answer those questions.
Zerodha IPO Updates — Upcoming and Open Issues
Short-Term and Long-Term Investment Approach
For Short-Term Participants
- Let the opening range form before interpreting a gap as a lasting trend.
- Check whether banking shares confirm any Nifty recovery.
- Decide the maximum acceptable loss before entering a position.
- Keep earnings-event trades separate from ordinary range trades; opening gaps can bypass planned exit prices.
For Long-Term Investors
A one-day move is a poor substitute for business analysis. Compare earnings quality, cash flow, debt and valuation before adding a company to a portfolio.
For the two stocks discussed here, the research questions differ. Canara Bank needs scrutiny of deposit economics and asset quality. Tata Technologies needs scrutiny of revenue durability and profit conversion.
Spreading purchases over time can reduce dependence on a single entry day, but it cannot protect against buying a weak business. Keep money needed for near-term commitments separate from equity investments.
Today’s Market Forecast: Five Points to Watch
- Opening bias is cautious: The verified overnight GIFT Nifty reading points to a softer start, subject to fresh morning moves.
- Nifty’s 22,500 area is the first test: Holding it could allow a stabilisation attempt; a sustained break would weaken the near-term setup.
- Banks need to participate: Watch Bank Nifty’s 55,082–55,194 reference area for evidence of buying interest.
- Earnings can create stock-specific moves: Canara Bank and Tata Technologies may behave differently from the broader indices.
- Oil and global headlines can change the session: Treat any early recovery as provisional until price action and market participation support it.
